Après avoir creusé des tranchées sommaires, ils passent la journée à attendre entourés de cadavres. Maurice Genevoix envoie l'un de ses hommes chercher les papiers de deux d'entre-eux, il reste marqué par l'humanisation de ces corps dont il possède maintenant les noms.

La nuit est là quand tout à coup des silhouettes noires jaillissent des ténèbres dans une clameur incroyable : "Hurrauh ! hurrah ! Vorwärts ! " : les allemands attaquent ! La surprise laisse place à un combat d'une grande violence alors qu'un orage s'ajoute à l'intensité de la bataille.

Die Kämpfe von Vaux-Marie beginnen am 6. September und endeten am 11. September. Sie fanden im Kontext der Marne-Schlacht statt, an der äußersten rechten Flanke, und hatten zum Ziel, den deutschen Vormarsch zu stoppen. Maurice Genevoix und Ceux de 14 nehmen zusammen mit dem 29. Jägerbataillon an den Kämpfen an der ehemaligen Maas-Bahnlinie teil.

Nacht vom 9. auf den 10. September : Sie müssen sich dort eines heftigen Angriffs erwehren, bei dem Maurice Genevoix beinahe getötet worden wäre. Am Ende der Schlacht ist die deutsche Armee auf Kosten schwerer Verluste zurückgeschlagen und abgewehrt. Maurice Genevoix hat von seinen 70 Männern nur noch 21. Dieser entscheidende Sieg bringt den deutschen Einkreisungsversuch Verduns zum stoppen. Nach einigen Ruhetagen geht es an die Verfolgung des Feindes.

… Schwarze Silhouetten tauchten auf dem Kamm des Hügels ganz in der Nähe auf, kaum sichtbar vor einem Himmel ohne Helligkeit. Sie waren kaum mehr 30 Meter entfernt, als ich die Spitzen der Helme erkannte. Da befahl ich, aus Leibeskräften schreiend, Dauerfeuer.

Fighting in La Vaux-Marie begins on 6 September and ends on 11 September. It takes place as part of the Battle of the Marne, on the far right of the front, with the aim of putting an end to the German advance. Maurice Genevoix and Those of 14 take part in this fighting, near the old Meusien railway, in collaboration with the 29th Battalion of Hunters.

Night of 9 to 10 September : They suffer a violent attack during which Maurice Genevoix is nearly killed. At the end of the battle, the German army is defeated and repelled, at the cost of heavy losses. Of these 70 men, Maurice Genevoix finds only 21 left. This decisive victory stops the Germans’ attempt at encircling Verdun. After a few day’s rest, they pursue the enemy.
